Description

The steading at Harelaw, Longniddry, dates from around 1800 and features later additions. It is a quadrangular steading with a prominent eastern entrance range and a farmhouse located behind it, which is listed separately. The structure is built from squared and snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings.

The eastern range is symmetrical and includes a two-storey entrance bay at the center, which has a segmental-arched pend and a tripartite window with stone mullions above, although this window is blocked. The attic features a dovecot with a row of flight holes that break the pyramidal roof, topped with a decorative weather vane. Flanking the entrance bay are lower cartshed and granary ranges, which include three cart arches with wooden double doors at ground level and small windows above that are partly louvred and glazed. To the left, there is a slightly higher return with a blank southeast elevation, while to the right is a single-storey cottage that has enlarged openings and a modern attic dormer. The entrance bay and the left side have grey slate roofing, while the right side and the cottage are covered with red pantiles, all featuring straight skews and ashlar stacks.

The northern range contains the farmhouse, which is listed separately. Access to the courtyard is through the pend. To the southwest is a cattle court, which includes ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps and an ashlar coped rubble retaining wall. There is also a piend roofed shelter supported by cast iron columns, covered with grey slates. A low rubble wall lines the road, featuring crenellated coping and drum gatepiers.
