Description

The Walled Garden at the Manse in Oldhamstocks dates back to the early 19th century. It is a two-storey, L-shaped, three-bay manse that is symmetrical in design. The building is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, featuring droved ashlar dressings and a base course.

On the southeast elevation, there are three widely grouped bays, with an advanced pedimented bay at the center that includes a pilastered doorpiece and a rectangular fanlight. Large windows on the ground floor flank the entrance, while smaller windows are present on the first floor of each bay.

The northeast elevation features an advanced wing to the right, which has a lean-to outbuilding to the north and a porch on the east return. A stair window is located at the center, flanked by a narrow window on the left at the first floor and additional windows on both floors in the outer bay.

The east elevation has a window at the center on both the ground and first floors, with an additional window to the right at ground level, all of which are irregular in size. The west elevation incorporates the gable of the original house and consists of four bays, with two narrow windows on each floor at the center and larger windows in the outer bays.

The sash and case windows feature a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the building has a piended slate roof with ashlar shouldered end stacks, some of which retain original cans.

Inside, there is a tripartite vestibule screen and a winding stone stair with decorative cast-iron railings.

The walled garden, located to the east of the Old Manse, has a rectangular plan measuring approximately 200 feet by 75 feet. It includes the remains of a former cottage or toolshed on the north wall at the west end. There is an arched gateway on the west and additional gateways in the east and north walls, along with a brick buttress to the north. The rubble boundary walls feature two sets of decorative wrought-iron gates at the north gateways.
