Description
Bankpark House is a substantial house dating to circa 1857, built in the Georgian style for John Grieve, owner of Bankpark Pottery. The main two-storey, double-pile block is accompanied by single-storey pavilions on either side, all set within a large brick-walled garden. Additional structures include a carriage house and greenhouses to the southeast, and a lodge at the southeast gate, with a nursery plantation enclosed by walls to the north.
The house is constructed of white-painted brick with brick flat-arch window surrounds, a brick base course, a projecting bank course, a dentil cornice, a blocking course, and grey slates covering a platformed double-pitched roof with twin corniced brick stacks topped with decorative cans at the gables.
The front (northwest) elevation features a central, pilastered tripartite doorway recessed within a fanlight arch, with a four-panelled door. Flanking the entrance are tripartite windows at ground floor, and three windows at the first floor, which have been fitted with later plate glass sashes. The single-storey, single-bay wings on either side have a single window each, along with a cornice and blocking course, and piended slated roofs.
The rear (southeast) elevation incorporates a central, tall stair window at an intermediate level. Windows are visible to the outer bays at both ground and first floor levels. A single window is present in the left-hand pavilion, while a brick gateway adjoins to the south, featuring a depressed arched overthrow with pilasters and wrought-iron gates. A door is positioned within the right-hand pavilion, also with decorative wrought-iron bars behind the glass. A vehicular gateway is adjacent, with corniced gatepiers supporting a wrought-iron overthrow with a lamp, leading to a carriage house and garage range to the east.
The interior features a tripartite screen door to the hall. The drawing room on the left at ground floor has a replaced chimney-piece dating to circa 1930, retaining original plasterwork. The dining room to the right exhibits a fine walnut neo-Georgian, Doric pilastered chimney-piece from circa 1910, incorporating an outstanding steel register and grate, as well as a very fine classical oval relief. Decorative 1930s light fittings are also present. A stone staircase remains, with original cast-iron balusters. Some Edwardian light fittings are found in the bedrooms, and chimney-pieces from circa 1910 are present throughout. Upstairs bathrooms retain 1930s Art Deco blue fittings and vitrolite to the walls.
The carriage house and garage, located to the east, is a tall brick building with a loft. Originally surrounded by courtyard walls, it was raised in the 1930s to create a garage with large boarded doors and decorative brick panels above. Extensive greenhouses adjoin to the south, with brick foundations and iron and timber framing.
An air-raid shelter survives in the garden to the west of the house.
The lodge, dating to the early 20th century, is a single-storey, three-bay structure at the southeast gate, constructed with harled walls, grey slates, and corniced stacks. It features a central door with a bracketted cornice, and tripartite windows with timber mullions and plate glass sashes.
The gates and gatepiers consist of east and west gates to Edinburgh Road. The east gates are formed by a pair of brick piers with foliate wrought-iron gates, similar to the west gates where they are accompanied by quadrant walls and piers.
Extensive brick garden walls enclose the garden and run along the main road. A nursery plantation is located to the north.
