Description

This is an early 19th century cottage, built around the time of David Hamilton, originally serving as a gatelodge for the Cawder Estate (other buildings associated with the estate are listed separately). It is a single-story rectangular building with three bays, and a prominent gabled front. The exterior is constructed from heavily pointed sandstone rubble, with a roughly textured finish ("droved and stugged"), and dressed with ashlar stone. Features include long and short rubble work around the window and door openings, ashlar strip quoins with a stop-chamfered profile, a splayed ashlar base course, a raised strip eaves course, and overhanging timber eaves supported by carved brackets and decorative bargeboards. Single hoodmoulds are present above the openings on the southern side.

The south elevation (the main facade) has three bays. The central bay projects and is gabled, and contains a large, rectangular window with stone mullions and a transom. To the right is an entrance porch, and a single window occupies the left bay. The west elevation has two bays, with a gabled end to the right. A sloping roof extension lies slightly set back to the left. A blind, ashlar-infilled opening is on the gable, and a plain window on the extension.

The north (rear) elevation originally had three bays, but is largely obscured by a later 19th century, low, single-story, four-bay lean-to extension, with a taller, single-bay extension to the right. Both extensions have a curved eaves course that forms lintels over the openings. The original lodge section has two doorways in the center, with windows to the far left and right (the right doorway is blocked with concrete block infill). A four-bay extension connects to the lodge below the eaves, and the right extension projects directly from the lodge eaves. A square window is present on the right extension (blocked with concrete block infill). An entrance porch is set back to the left, next to a blocked doorway also filled with concrete blocks.

The east elevation shows the advanced gable of the entrance porch, with two tall, narrow strip windows. A side of the sloping roof extension is visible to the far right, along with a blocked window, raised surround, and concrete block infill. The interior was not accessible for inspection in 2004.

Most of the original windows are timber sash and case windows with four panes, though some have been replaced in the 20th century, particularly at the rear. Later 20th century doors are also present. The roof is pitched and covered with late 20th century concrete tiles. The building has a tall, triple-shafted, octagonal chimney stack on the ridge, set on an ashlar plinth, with classically moulded octagonal coping stones, though the clay cans are now missing.
