Description
Cawdermill House is likely late 18th century, with additions from the earlier 19th century. It is a derelict former stables, house, and inn situated on the Forth and Clyde Canal. The building has a U-shaped footprint and is constructed of squared random rubble, originally rendered, with some render remaining on the sides and rear. Raised stone margins, stone cills, strip quoins, stone lintels to openings, and a projecting eaves course are present, along with overhanging eaves supported by brackets. Segmental and round-arched, hoodmoulded openings are found at the rear.
The southeast elevation, facing the canal, is single-storeyed with a 3-bay central cottage, possibly of earlier date. This is flanked by a single-storey gabled pavilion to the left and a 2-storey gabled pavilion to the right, which is likely from the 19th century. A gabled porch with a finial is centrally advanced on the cottage, with windows on either side. To the far left block, there is a blind, tall segmental archway with a raised strip architrave; a blocked window is inset, and a large arched fanlight was originally positioned above, separated by a cornice. The ground and first floors to the far right feature a ground floor replacing an earlier double doorway, likely stable doors. A small round-arched opening with a raised margin is present in the gablehead.
The southwest elevation has a large double doorway with a steel beam lintel and a modern steel doorframe and door. A perpendicular wall adjoins the elevation at its centre. Remains of another, potentially related building are visible further to the southwest.
The northeast elevation shows a recessed, single-storey, 3-bay cottage to the centre, with an advanced gabled pavilion to the far left. A small, round-arched slit opening is at ground level and in the gablehead to the left. An advanced gabled pavilion is also present to the far right, featuring a bipartite, round-arched, hoodmoulded window to the upper gable, with a window to the ground floor left and a later doorway to the right. A further advanced, single-storey, gabled wing is set in the re-entrant angle between the left pavilion and the cottage, with a window to the upper gable and segmental-arched windows to the ground floor. Ruins of various extensions and outhouses to the north of the cottage obscure original openings.
The northwest elevation displays three bays, with a central ground floor window and two first-floor windows to the outer bays.
Interior access was not possible in 2004.
