Description

This is a 1930s villa situated in Bearsden, designed with a mock half-timbered aesthetic and a fine interior. The house is rectangular in plan, comprising two storeys with a raised basement, and a single storey with an attic, presented as a five-bay design. The exterior is largely whitewashed harl with brick detailing.

The principal, east-facing elevation features a projecting half-timbered gable above a brick porch, with steps leading to a basket-arched doorpiece. A canted oriel window is positioned at the first floor, set against the gablehead. A small recessed bay to the right contains a stair window that breaks the eaves into a gabled dormerhead. Further bays to the right have tall tripartite windows beneath swept roofs, incorporating two piended dormers. A former service wing and garage extend to the outer right. Two round-arched windows are present at ground level, culminating in a projecting gabled bay. A piended dormer and roof light are located on the first floor.

The south elevation displays a gabled design with a monumental stepped brick chimney breast incorporating an inglenook with a segmental-headed window and a tall bipartite window to the right. Additional windows are present on both ground and first floors. The west-facing, garden elevation steps down steeply, with two bays incorporating a raised basement and a canted brick ground floor. A small window sits below a ground floor tripartite window, and a jettied gable features a four-light window. A door is located below a canted window, with a swept roof and piended dormer above. Asymmetrically-fenestrated, plainer harl-clad bays are slightly set back to the left, punctuated by piended wallhead dormers and a narrow gabled bay to the outer left.

The windows feature small-pane glazing patterns in a combination of casement and top-opening styles. Decorative leaded glazing is present in the inglenook, oriel, and stair windows. The roof is covered with rosemary tiles. Brick stacks have banded step-coping with cans, while the ashlar-coped skewputts are moulded. Some eaves overhang, accompanied by plain bargeboarding. Cast-iron downpipes are accented with elaborately decorated rainwater hoppers.

The interior retains a good decorative scheme, with panelled timber doors and architraves. The stairhall is panelled, featuring a timber dog-leg staircase with carved heraldic beasts. The dining room has a carved fireplace with a panelled overmantel, flanking glass-doored cupboards, a panelled dado, and a metal-lined serving hatch. An inglenook-style fireplace is found in a ground-floor room, while a brick fireplace with a polygonal bell hood is located in the study. The first-floor bathroom is particularly noteworthy, featuring a low WC with a timber cistern, and resin tiles, both plain and decorative.

The terrace walls are coped brick, with steps leading to the west. Polygonal brick gatepiers are surmounted by conical caps.
