Description
Pinehurst is an Arts and Crafts style house with Elizabethan influences, built around 1912 and attributed to the architectural firm of Keppie and Henderson. The house is single-storey with a raised basement, and includes a two-storey corner pavilion. The exterior is finished with white painted harl, flush timber windows featuring mullions and transoms, and Rosemary tile-hanging to gableheads and the first floor of the pavilion.
The north (entrance) elevation is arranged around a U-plan entrance court. To the left, a taller gabled bay projects, featuring a large canted Hall window and a cross window on its return. An advanced, piend-roofed wing is situated to the right. A recessed porch is located centrally, featuring cusped windows, and abuts a single-storey link passage with narrow windows under the eaves, connecting the wings. The two-storey corner pavilion is positioned to the outer left, with a tripartite window on the ground floor and a narrower window under the eaves above.
The south (garden) elevation has three near-identical gabled projections to the left of centre, each with tall, blind basement areas – two with five lights, and one central with six lights, including a timber forestair leading to a basement door. Three bays to the right of centre feature a tall, piend-roofed, eight-light window flanked by flush tripartite windows.
The west elevation is four bays wide. The outer left and centre bays incorporate tall, gabled, four-light windows, flanking a basement window, a two-leaf door, and flush bipartite windows at principal floor level.
The east elevation is dominated by a two-storey pavilion to the outer right, which includes a garage recessed to the basement. A harled stone forestair leads to a later projecting porch with a catslide roof. There are two cross windows to the principal floor and a narrow tripartite window under the eaves within the tile-hung first floor. A basement door is flanked by a basement window and a tall, five-light, canted, gabled window to the outer left. The windows are fitted with square leaded panes. The roof is red Rosemary tile with a bellcast profile, overhanging eaves supported by timber brackets, and studded bargeboards to the gableheads. Chimneys are finished with harled stacks and sandstone copings, topped with terracotta cans.
The interior, only partially inspected, includes a wainscot-panelled room running north-south at the centre. This room features an ashlar chimneypiece with Tudor arches, bearing heraldic beasts (possibly painted or inlaid), and a timber-beamed, coombed roof. A segmental-arched clerestory window, located behind the porch, provides illumination from the north.
Stepped, three-tier walls of squared and snecked rubble form the terrace at the south, continuing around the rising ground to the west.
