Description

This is a three-storey Beaux-Arts office building, likely designed by J & RS Ingram around 1875. It occupies a prominent corner location on West George Street in Kilmarnock.

The building is constructed of coursed polished ashlar, with a rusticated ground floor. The principal, south-facing elevation features four bays, with an adjoining canted corner section to the left. A pilastered surround frames the arched entrance doorway, which includes a bearded mask keystone with carved floriate spandrels and ornate scrolled brackets supporting a segmental pediment. Flanking the doorway are giant pilasters which extend the full height of the building. Tripartite windows are positioned above the entrance on the first and second floors, separated by a scroll-bracketed balconette. The bays to the left feature rectangular windows with rusticated pilasters, a projecting cornice incorporating column plinths, and another scroll-bracketed balconette between the first and second floors. A full corniced parapet sits above the eaves.

The northwest elevation is simpler, with two regularly spaced bays on each floor. The east elevation has a canted four-sided end with arched windows in the ground floor bays. A former arched doorway has been replaced with a window. The first and second floors feature regularly placed bays, with alternating pilasters and columns flanking the windows; scroll brackets support rectangular corniced pediments which form the sills of the upper storey windows. A corniced parapet with capitals tops the elevation. An octagonal, platformed roof, capped with a projecting copper cornice, rises from the end bay.

The windows are timber sash and case, with some upper sashes featuring horns. Ground floor windows on the south elevation have four panes, with fixed plate glass in the lower section and three horizontally placed panes above. Arched windows with two panes are found in the ground floor end bays. The interior, now converted to offices, retains some cornicing, timber skirting boards, panelled doors, and timber dividers. The roof is piended grey slate, partially concealed by the parapet, with an octagonal, piended and platformed roof above the arched end bay. A projecting copper cornice tops this. Metal ridging, flashings, and valleys are present. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place, and the gutter is concealed behind the parapet, draining into a downpipe shared with the adjacent Expo building. A dressed ashlar stack is present on the east gable, featuring projecting ashlar neck copes and five tall octagonal cans. Two smaller wallhead stacks, each with a single can, are also present on the north side.
