Description
92 Clepington Road in Dundee is a building likely designed by city architect J MacLellan Brown in 1941. It consists of a row of two shops and a public house, the latter featuring an unaltered interior by Messrs Ostler.
The elevation facing Clepington Road is a single storey with channelled ashlar angles, a cornice, and a stepped blocking course. The shopfronts of Nos 92 and 94 have been altered, while the public house at Nos 96-98 retains its original tiled front. There are end doors with bowed fluted lintels flanking a three-light horizontal window with margined glazing bars, along with original signage above.
At the rear, the building is rendered and features catslide projections and a later flat-roofed extension to No 94. It has a piended red tiled roof with two stacks on the rear slope.
Inside the public house, the layout of the bar, lounge, and bottle and jug areas remains unaltered. There is three-quarter height panelling throughout, with curved ends to the partitions. The lavatory doors and lounge have coloured glass windows, and there is an outside window advertising Benard's Edinburgh Ales. The bar gantry includes original woodwork, lights, and etched and enamelled mirrors, one of which features an RAF plane. Additional features include a built-in pre-decimal cash register, a tiled fireplace, linoleum floors, and terrazzo entrances. No 92 still has its original chemist shop fittings.
