Description

This is a group of houses and a semi-detached villa forming a neo-classical cul-de-sac in Dundee, constructed between 1828 and 1851. The development began in 1828 and was feued between 1830 and 1831 with further construction occurring by 1846, with modifications later excluding Springfield House. The layout rises in terraces towards the sea, terminating with a semi-detached house to the north and shorter terraces along Perth Road.

The majority of the properties, numbered 5 to 14 and 18 to 27, are two-storey houses with basements (some of which have been filled in). These are arranged in pairs, each pair distinguished by a central tetrastyle Doric portico and originally had wrought and cast-iron balconies above, though most have been lost. Windows are set within lugged architraves, corniced at ground level, with first-floor cill courses. A main cornice and balustrade runs along the top of the buildings. The lower pairs are alternately advanced and recessed, while the upper pairs are generally on the same plane. Most pairs have pilaster strips defining their northern ends.

Nos 15 and 16 have a full-length ground-floor colonnade. A modern addition sits west of No 15. Nos 17 and 28 are single three-bay houses, each with a portico on the left side. A single-storey link connects No 17 to No 16.

Along Perth Road, Nos 1-4 and 29-32 are symmetrical eight-bay structures, with the two bays at each end slightly advanced and featuring central tetrastyle porticos. No 1 is angled to meet Perth Road and includes a trabeated porch to the side. No 32 has a later hemispherical bow rising through the ground and first floors, supported by pilasters, and a Doric portico with a cast-iron balcony. Balustrading has been recently restored at No 3.

The corner houses, Nos 4 and 29, each have two bays facing Perth Road and three bays facing Springfield. No 4 features a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack to Springfield, with a restored balustrade. No 29 has a portico on the right side; its wallhead stack has been partially removed to make way for a later slate mansard roof with consoled dormers.

The windows are predominantly sash and case, with most now featuring two panes of glass, though some retain the original four or twelve panes. Some modern windows are also present. The roofs are low-pitched and slate-covered, with ridge stacks. The rear of the buildings are constructed of rubble.

Several interiors retain original plasterwork, with Ionic details. Original ironwork railings are missing. The development was conceived in 1830 and 1831, designed by an architect from Edinburgh.
