Description
13 Springfield, Dundee, is a Neo-classical cul-de-sac development of houses constructed between 1828 and 1851. The properties were feued between 1830 and 1831 and completed by 1846, with subsequent modifications that excluded Springfield House. The terraces are stepped up from the sea, culminating in a semi-detached house to the north and shorter terraces along Perth Road.
The majority of the houses, numbered 5 to 14 and 18 to 27, are arranged in pairs, two storeys high with basement levels (some basements have been infilled). Each paired house features a central tetrastyle Doric portico, originally accompanied by wrought and cast-iron balconies (now largely absent), with windows set within lugged architraves, corniced at ground level. A first-floor cill course runs continuously along the facades. There is a main cornice and balustrade. Lower pairs are alternately advanced and recessed, while later upper pairs are on the same plane. Almost all but the recessed pairs feature pilaster strips marking the north end.
Numbers 15 and 16 have a similarly styled design but incorporate a full-length ground floor colonnade. A modern addition has been constructed to the west of number 15. Numbers 17 and 28 are single, three-bay houses with a portico to the left-hand side, connected by a 1-storey link to number 16.
The elevations facing Perth Road consist of symmetrical eight-bay arrangements, with numbers 1 to 4 and 29 to 32 having bays at each end that are slightly advanced. These also feature central tetrastyle porticos. Number 1 is angled to accommodate Perth Road and features a trabeated porch to the side. Number 32 has a later hemispherical, pilastered bow rising through the ground and first floors, along with a Doric portico and cast-iron balcony. Number 3 has a later mullioned appearance and a restored balustrade.
The corner houses, numbered 4 and 29, have two bays facing Perth Road and three bays facing Springfield. Number 4 has a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack to Springfield, along with a restored balustrade. Number 29 features a portico to the right and a wallhead stack that has been partly removed for a later slate mansard roof with consoled dormers.
Most windows are later two-pane sash and case, though some retain four or twelve panes, and others are modern. Low-pitched slate roofs cover the buildings, with ridge stacks. The rear elevations are constructed of rubble.
Some original plastered Ionic interiors remain. Railings are missing. Historic documents, dating back to 1830, indicate that the development was designed according to a plan by an "eminent architect" in Edinburgh.
