Description
Springfield is a late 1820s neo-classical terrace of houses, with subsequent construction completed by 1851. Originally feued between 1830 and 1831, the development was designed according to plans by an Edinburgh architect. The terrace forms a cul-de-sac, stepped upwards from the sea and culminating in a semi-detached house to the north, with shorter terraces along Perth Road.
The majority of the houses, numbers 5 to 14 and 18 to 27, are two-storey structures with basement levels (some of which have been infilled). They are built in pairs, each pair featuring a central tetrastyle Doric portico and originally including wrought and cast-iron balconies (most of which are now absent). The windows are set within lugged architraves, corniced at ground level, and with first-floor cill courses. A main cornice and balustrade run along the terrace. The lower pairs are alternately advanced and recessed, while the upper pairs are generally on the same plane. Almost all but the recessed pairs have pilaster strips defining their north ends.
Numbers 15 and 16 have a similar style but incorporate a full-length ground floor colonnade. A modern addition exists to the west of number 15. Numbers 17 and 28 are single, three-bay houses with a portico to the left, and a one-storey link connects number 17 to number 16.
The houses facing Perth Road, numbers 1 to 4 and 29 to 32, are each symmetrical, eight-bay structures, with the two bays at each end slightly advanced. They share a similar style to the rest of the terrace, including a central tetrastyle portico. Number 1 is positioned at an angle to accommodate Perth Road, featuring a trabeated porch on the side. Number 32 has a later hemispherical, pilastered bow that rises through the ground and first floors, along with a Doric portico and cast-iron balcony. Number 3 has been altered and features a mullioned balustrade.
The corner houses, positioned at the junction of Perth Road and Springfield, are two bays wide facing Perth Road and three bays wide facing Springfield. They share a similar style to the rest of the terrace. Number 4 has a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack to Springfield, with a recently restored balustrade. Number 29 features a portico on the right side and a wallhead stack that was partially removed to accommodate a later slate mansard roof with consoled dormers.
The windows are predominantly sash and case, with most being later two-pane; some retain original four or twelve-pane glass, while others are modern replacements. The buildings have low-piended slate roofs with ridge stacks. The rears are constructed of rubble. Some well-preserved, plastered Ionic interiors remain within the houses. Original iron railings are missing.
