Description

2 Springfield is a late 1820s neo-classical terrace built in a cul-de-sac setting, with subsequent additions completed by 1851. The development was originally feued between 1830 and 1831, with Nos 1-6 and 24-32 constructed by 1846, and the layout later modified to exclude Springfield House.

The terrace comprises Nos 5-14 and 18-27, arranged in stepped pairs and extending upwards from the sea. These are two-storey houses with basements, some of which have been filled in. Each pair features a central tetrastyle Doric portico, and originally had wrought and cast-iron balconies above (most of which are now absent). The windows are set within lugged architraves, with cornicing at ground floor level and a first floor cill course. A main cornice and balustrade run along the terrace. The lower pairs are alternately advanced and recessed into the slope, while the upper pairs sit on the same plane. All but the recessed pairs have pilaster strips defining their north ends.

Nos 15 and 16 have a similar style, but with a full-length ground floor colonnade. A modern addition exists to the west of No 15. Nos 17 and 28 are single, three-bay houses with a portico on their left side, and are linked to No 16 by a one-storey structure.

The elevations facing Perth Road consist of Nos 1-4 and 29-32, which are each symmetrical eight-bay structures, with the two end bays slightly advanced. They share a similar design to the main terrace, featuring central tetrastyle porticos. No 1 is positioned at an angle to accommodate Perth Road, with a trabeated porch on its side. No 32 features a Doric portico, a cast-iron balcony, and a later hemispherical, pilastered bow which rises through both the ground and first floors. Alterations and a mullioned balustrade are present at No 3.

The corner houses, Nos 4 and 29, are two bays wide facing Perth Road and three bays wide facing Springfield, sharing a similar style. No 4 includes a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack facing Springfield, with a recently restored balustrade. No 29 features a portico on its right side, with a wallhead stack that was partly removed for a later slate mansard roof with consoled dormers.

Most windows are now 2-pane sash and case, though some retain their original 4 or 12-pane glazing, while others are modern replacements. The roofs are low-pitched and slate-covered, with ridge stacks. The rear of the buildings are constructed of rubble.

Some original, well-preserved, plastered Ionic interiors are present. Original iron railings are missing. Historic documents from 1830 and 1831 refer to the development being designed by an “eminent architect” in Edinburgh.
