Description

7-25 Bank Street in Dundee is a former office and printing works for the Dundee Courier and Advertiser, designed by Charles Edward in 1859 and extended by Charles Ower senior in 1864 and 1870, with further extensions by Charles and Leslie Ower in 1874, 1883, and 1889. This four-storey building features 24 bays and is classically detailed, arranged in four sections of five bays each, with single windows linking and flanking the bays. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with rubble at the rear, and has a grey slate roof.

The ground floor is channelled, while the first and second floors have a cornice with balustraded window aprons. The building has a bracketted wallhead cornice and a balustraded parapet with dies. The windows are architraved, with cornices on the first and second floors, and pediments above the central bays of each section, as well as the linking and right flanking bays. The left section features all pedimented windows on the first floor and segmentally pedimented windows on the second. The linking bays are slightly advanced and have rusticated quoins. Most windows are 4-pane timber sash and case, with 12-pane windows at the rear.

On the front elevation, there is a doorcase on the far left with a consoled and keystoned lintel, featuring the John Leng and Co monogram at the keystone. There are four additional doors and 19 windows on the ground floor, along with 24 windows on the upper floors, including bipartite windows on the third floor at the far left. Three decorative metal pendant lamp brackets are also present.

The rear elevation consists of a four-storey, 12-bay section on the left, which is slightly recessed at the lower three floors, specifically the fourth to seventh bays from the left. This section is symmetrical with 12 windows on all floors, including a bipartite window and a corbelled, conically roofed angle window in the attic on the left. To the right is a five-storey, 6-bay section, also symmetrical with six windows on each floor. Finally, there is a lower five-storey, 6-bay section at the far right, symmetrical with six windows on all floors, featuring a square-section chimney stalk rising from the angle on the right, capped with a corniced brick upper stage. The interior has not been seen.
