Description

38-40 Reform Street in Dundee is a four-storey, five-bay building facing Reform Street and six-bay facing Bank Street. Designed by George Angus in 1832, following a plan by William Burn from 1824, it serves as a corner block of shops, offices, and flats with classical detailing.

The exterior is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with some painted areas and modern cladding on the ground floor, and a concealed slate roof. It features a corniced frieze on the first floor, which was formerly balustraded along Reform Street, a cill band on the second floor, and a dentilled main cornice on the third floor topped with a corniced blocking course. The first-floor windows are architraved, while the upper floors have 12-pane timber sash and case glazing, with some windows altered to two panes. The building also has corniced stacks.

On the Reform Street elevation, there are modern shopfronts at ground level, with five windows on each upper floor and a dormer. The Bank Street elevation includes two moulded doorcases with consoled lintels, flanked by two lugged-architraved and aproned windows to the left of the door, with modern shopfronts to the right. There are six windows on each upper floor, although some are blinded on the right and at the second bay from the left on the second and third floors, with a stack rising from the blocking course.

The interior has not been seen.
