Description

3 and 4 City Square in Dundee is a four-storey block designed by Sir John James Burnet in 1924, with significant redesign work by J MacLellan Brown between 1931 and 1933. The building features shops that match the design of the West Wing located opposite at 14-22 City Square, although it has a pavilion that is off-centre and shallower in projection.

The front facing the square has a five-bay central pavilion that corresponds to the West Wing, with a ground floor shop showcasing original details and flanking entrances framed by granite architraves. The first and second floor windows are vertically integrated within rusticated recesses, while there are flanking tripartite bays without shops. To the right, there is one bay without a shop, and to the left, there are eight bays with ground floor shops. The shop details along these eight bays and the High Street frontage have been largely modernised, although they were originally designed to have a unified treatment similar to the entrance of No 5, which features black granite.

There is a single-storey link to Caird Hall, with a glazed upper extension set back to the far right, and a pend leading through to Castle Street. The building has a single bay quadrant corner on the High Street frontage, with three bays at 7-8 High Street that feature giant Ionic pilasters, corresponding to the 22-24 High Street frontage of the West Wing. The three bays to the left have a simple treatment that continues with the left-hand eight bays of the City Square frontage. The glazing is consistent with that of the West Wing at the pavilion on the City Square frontage and in the right-hand bay only; the remainder has a T-divide at the first floor, with small paned sashes above.
