Description

26 and 28 Reform Street in Dundee is a three-storey building designed by George Angus in 1832, based on plans by William Burn from 1824. This classically detailed block consists of shops, offices, and flats arranged in two sections with nine symmetrical bays, contributing to the mostly unified appearance of Reform Street. The exterior features painted ashlar and a concealed slate roof.

The ground floor has shopfronts that were originally pilastered and balustraded, although most have been altered. The balustrade remains only at the doorpiece of Nos 16-24 and at the shopfronts of Nos 26 and 28. There is a cill band at the second floor and a dentilled, corniced balustraded parapet, which has been replaced by an incongruous attic storey at Nos 30 and 32. The first-floor windows are architraved, while the second-floor windows are plain. The original window design featured a 12-pane timber sash and case glazing pattern, but most have been changed to a 2-pane style.

The central bay of each section features a doorpiece with fluted Ionic columns in antis, although the columns have been removed from Nos 26-32. The building also has corniced axial stacks. Inside, No 16 boasts fine plasterwork with a domed interior.
