Description
61 and 63 Reform Street in Dundee is a classical terrace of shops, offices, and flats designed by George Angus in 1832, following a layout by William Burn from 1824. The building consists of three and four stories, with some later dormers added. The main structure includes a four-storey, 11-bay block that is slightly advanced at the center (Nos 37-45), flanked by two three-storey, 9-bay blocks on the left (Nos 45-63) and right (Nos 17-35), and a four-storey, 9-bay block at the far right (Nos 7-15). There is also a further seven-bay block with a rounded angle to the High Street (Nos 1-5).
The exterior is finished in painted ashlar with a concealed slate roof. The ground floor shopfronts were originally pilastered and balustraded, though they have been significantly altered. However, the original or restored frontages can still be seen at Nos 7-15, 17-25, and 47-51. The building features cill bands on the first and second floors, a corniced and balustraded parapet at Nos 17-35 and 47-63, a main cornice on the third floor, and a corniced blocking course at Nos 1-15 and 37-45. The first-floor windows have architraves, while the other floors have plain jambs. The window frames were originally 12-pane timber sash and case, but many have been altered to 2- or 4-pane designs, with some replaced by out-of-character uPVC. Various dormers are also present. The building has corniced axial stacks and features a large three-faced clock at H Samuel's, located at the rounded angle to the High Street.
The interior has not been seen, but it is likely to contain some good classical features.
