Description

This is a late 18th century farmhouse accompanied by a mid-to-late 19th century steading located to the southeast.

The two-storey, three-bay symmetrical farmhouse has a rear single-storey wing, resulting in a T-shaped plan. It is built with rubble walls with painted margins. The central doorway is modern, and the windows are single-light, sash windows with replacement glazing. The gable ends are skewed, and there are coped end stacks. The roof is covered in good quality graded slate with a sandstone ridge and incorporates two skylights.

The steading is an L-shaped arrangement of three main buildings around a courtyard. All elements are constructed with rubble walls and slate roofs. The earliest building is an 18th century threshing barn, which was later adapted for use as a straw house. A larger threshing back-barn was built to the northwest in the mid-19th century. A further L-shaped range of single-storey byres was added to the south in the later 19th century. The threshing barn and back-barn are two-storey, with ground-floor byres and storage areas accessed from the courtyard on the south side. A projecting gabled cart entrance with full-height doors is featured on the north wall. A threshing machine was formerly located at the east end. The roofs are piended and were re-roofed in 1993. The straw house is also two-storey and features a blocked depressed-arch doorway on the west side. It has an unusual roof structure with principal rafters, collars, and side purlins, pegged to battens. The byre range consists of single-storey loose byres. A wheel pit is located beside the east elevation of the barn; no machinery survives.
