Description

This is a pair of early 19th century, two-storey houses built in a classical style. They form part of a terrace adjoining the west end of Cumberland Terrace, which is also a listed building. The main, north-facing elevations of each house have three bays arranged symmetrically around a central entrance, featuring pilastered door surrounds. An additional, asymmetrical bay exists to the west of No.11, with windows on both floors; the ground floor window is a converted door opening. The buildings have a rectangular plan and single-storey, monopitched rear elevations. They are prominently located on Church Street in Annan, just east of the town centre.

The roofs are pitched and covered in slate, with cut-down chimney stacks, replacement pots, and stone skews. No.13 has walls finished with a pebble-dashed surface, along with painted ashlar margins and an eaves band, and features replacement uPVC casement windows. No. 11 has walls of stugged red sandstone ashlar with raised margins and painted surrounds, and replacement six-pane timber sliding sash windows. Each house has a timber panelled front door with a transom light.

Photographs taken in 2024 reveal that the interior of No. 11 has been partially modernised but retains some original simple joinery, plasterwork, flooring, and a staircase. The interiors of No. 13 have not been inspected.

The houses are set back from the street, each with a small front garden enclosed by a stone parapet wall with simple gate piers and metal gates. They present as a distinct pair at the west end of Cumberland Terrace. No. 13 shares a pend with No. 1 Cumberland Terrace.

Historical records show the houses appeared on the Great Reform Act Plan of 1832 and were clearly illustrated on the Ordnance Survey Town Plan of Annan from 1859. The maps depict the original setting, with open views north over fields towards the parish church. Development of the opposite sides of Church Street and Charles Street occurred by the late 19th century, as shown on the Ordnance Survey 2nd Edition map of 1899.

The buildings continue in residential use.
