1 Johnstone Cottages, Johnstone Park, Dumfries

6 Johnstone Cottages, located in Johnstone Park, Dumfries, is a building designed by James Barbour and dated 1886. It was constructed for a charitable trust and consists of three detached, two-storey villa-style blocks featuring Northern European Gothic detailing. The cottages are arranged around a large open green, which is bordered to the west by a low wall.

The buildings are made of stugged red ashlar with polished dressings and include mullioned windows, most of which have depressed ogee hood-moulds, along with some canted windows. Each block features gabled shallow porches, and the main gabled bays are cavetto-corbelled above the ground floor, adorned with Aesthetic movement terracotta panels at the center.

The inner eastern block has a prominent central gable, with recessed three-bay ranges on either side that include central porches and outer wall-head gables. There are L-plan detached blocks to the north and south, each with a similarly styled three-bay range adjoining the eastern end of the main gable, and the return western elevations each feature three wall-head gables. The buildings have plain barge boards, fluted stacks, and roofs covered with graded slates.
