Description

Hitchill is a farmhouse and steading that includes buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring a particularly impressive barn. The structures are primarily made of whitewashed rubble with ashlar dressings, and the house has contrasting painted margins. Most of the roofs are covered with graded slates.

The house, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, is two storeys high with three bays and has a central gabled porch made of brick and ashlar. The brick stacks are also notable, while the rear wings of the house are not original.

The barn is a tall freestanding structure located at the west end of the steading. It dates back to the 18th century and was extended in length during the first half of the 19th century. The barn features a square-headed door in an outshot leading to the courtyard, with a dovecot above that has a row of square flight holes. The main roof sweeps over the barn, and there is a forestair in the re-entrant angle, along with a cornice over the original building.

The remainder of the steading consists of an extensive series of ranges, mostly single storey, arranged and stepped to follow the slope of the land. To the east, there is a lesser court, with the eastern range serving as an implement shed constructed with post and lintel techniques. The well-maintained rubble walls along the driveway are also whitewashed.
