Description
Cowhill House is a tower house addition dated 1914, designed by Peddie & Forbes Smith and built as an extension to the east end of the original Cowhill House. It is a four-storey and attic structure of rectangular plan, described as a full-size "tower house." The tower is constructed of roughly-coursed red masonry with ashlar dressings, featuring roll-moulded openings largely situated beneath relieving arches. A door is located at the south side of the east wall, with a crest positioned above it. The tower's elevations have irregularly placed window openings, all containing small-paned sashes. A corbelled and crenellated parapet, incorporating spouts and bartizans (one with a conical roof), surrounds the east gable. Other notable features include crow-stepped gables and coped end and north wall-head stacks. Two lower, square bays are present, each with a south-facing crow-stepped gable; one is on the west wall and the other projects from the south wall.
Inside, the ground floor displays wooden panelling with Corinthian pilasters, along with decorative ceiling plasterwork and chimney pieces. A wheel stair connects to the earlier section of the house. The remainder of the original Cowhill House has been substantially altered and is not part of this listing. Plans for the tower were initially drawn up in 1906, redesigned in 1914, and a previous scheme by W.F. Lyon dates from 1871. The listing acknowledges drawings indexed in the NMRS Peddie and Kinnear drawings index.
