Description

2 Upper Dean Terrace in Edinburgh is an impressive example of a terrace of townhouses designed by James Milne between 1816 and 1817, with some later additions in the attic. This extensive stepped terrace features two-storey, three-bay townhouses built in a plain classical style, set on a steeply sloping site to the northeast, with gardens at the front. The exterior is constructed from sandstone ashlar, showcasing a band course and banded cill courses, along with a corniced eaves course. The doorways are moulded and architraved, topped with cornices. Some of the houses have later rectangular tile-hung dormers, particularly Nos. 5 and 6, which feature triangular pediments.

The northwest (rear) elevation is made of coursed rubble, accented with droved ashlar rybats, lintels, and cills. The fenestration is roughly regular, with some cast iron balconies on the second floor and a few later single-storey extensions.

The windows predominantly feature a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style. The pitched roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced ashlar ridge stacks with some clay cans. The property also includes cast-iron rainwater goods and cast-iron railings that edge the basement area recess facing the street.

Inside, the interiors seen in 2010 reveal a decorative classical scheme, characterized by intricate plasterwork, large drawing rooms, and stone staircases with well-detailed balustrades, all topped by large cupolas.
