Description
64, 66, 68, 70 Cumberland Street is a terraced tenement building designed by Thomas Brown in the early 19th century. It is three stories tall with a basement and features seven bays. The exterior is made of polished ashlar sandstone, with painted polished ashlar at the principal floor. The principal floor has pilasters that frame the shop fronts, and there are band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal floor and the first floor. The shop fronts are corniced, and there are cill courses for the first and second floor windows, along with a cornice and blocking course at the second floor. The first floor windows are architraved and have cornices.
On the south elevation, there is a six-panel timber door with a multi-pane rectangular fanlight at the center of the principal floor, flanked by a three-bay shop front to the left, which includes a glazed timber door and plate glass windows. To the right is a two-bay shop front with a glazed timber door, an infilled rectangular fanlight, and a plate glass window. The outer right features another two-bay shop front with a four-panel timber door that has glazed upper panels, a rectangular fanlight, and a plate glass window. The upper floors have regular fenestration.
The east elevation is made of coursed rubble and is mostly blank, with a window centered at the principal floor and a small light at the first floor. The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (16 and 18 St Vincent Street).
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There is a squared and snecked rubble ridge stack with ashlar quoins, and a rubble gablehead stack with ashlar quoins, both of which are coped and have circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also noted for its ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings.
