Description
Craigmillar Primary School, designed by E J MacRae in 1932, is a two-storey, 54-bay linear school building located at 11 Harewood Road, Edinburgh. The school features a symmetrical design with generously sized windows and an open U-plan, where the outer bays of the south (principal) elevation are splayed forward. The exterior is rendered and has polished ashlar dressings, with painted surfaces. Architectural details include a base course, cill courses at both the ground and first floors, a band course between these floors, a decorative frieze along the eaves, and a corniced eaves course.
The principal elevation has an 8-bay advanced block at the center, featuring regular fenestration on both floors, topped with a cornice and blocking course. This block includes a blank central wallhead tablet and is accentuated by a raised pediment at the center, with ball finials on pyramidal plinths at the outer edges. The rest of the principal elevation maintains regular fenestration, including three-light canted windows at the ground floor in the penultimate bays near the re-entrant angles, with tripartite windows above. There are also two mirrored single-bay entrance blocks that are slightly advanced, leading to the 'Girls' entrance on the west and the 'Boys' entrance on the east, each featuring steps up to timber doors with fanlights. The remaining bays of the elevation contain blank architraved doorways.
The west elevation has not been seen since 1999. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, along with a variety of multi-pane casement windows and modern glazing at the rear. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and the building has cast-iron rainwater goods, with rendered ridge stacks and red brick wallhead stacks that are coped and fitted with circular cans.
Inside, the school is predominantly unaltered, with the Dining Hall showcasing a mural titled 'Children's Games and Amusements' by John Maxwell, created between 1934 and 1935.
