Description

General, Kew Terrace in Edinburgh is a pair of terraced houses built around 1863. These two-storey, three-bay homes feature crow-stepped corbelled dormers and are constructed from stugged squared and snecked sandstone ashlar. The ground floor openings have lintels, and the roofs have coped skews with skewputts at the ends of the advanced houses numbered 1-2 and 6-7.

The front elevation is symmetrical, with a central panelled timber door that has a fanlight above. There is a geometrical hoodmould with a rectangular plaque above the door. Flanking the door are windows that are topped by a corbel course, which is raised at the lintel for the advanced window bays on the first floor.

The windows are four-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a double pitch. There are various chimney stacks made of corniced and coped squared and snecked sandstone ashlar, as well as coped rendered stacks with cylindrical and octagonal cans, some of which are pierced. The property also features cast-iron rainwater goods.

The boundary walls consist of low coped stugged squared and snecked sandstone ashlar walls along the street, which are raised at the ends. There are also high coped boundary walls enclosing the courts at the back.
