Description

This mid-19th century hotel is a large, two-storey and attic L-plan baronial villa featuring a central turret with a polygonal roof. It is constructed from polished, coursed sandstone ashlar and includes a base course, hoodmoulds over the windows of the advanced gabled bay, and decorative elements such as skews, skewputts, and finials on the gables.

On the south (front) elevation, there is an advanced gabled bay to the left, which has a canted bay on the ground floor. This bay features a string course and cornice, with a stone balustrade above that has ball finials on the dies, creating a balcony for the bipartite window on the first floor. There is a narrow light at the gablehead and an engaged octagonal turret that rises to the attic level in the center. The ground floor doorpiece has a moulded, shouldered surround topped with a recessed square plaque, leading to a panelled timber door with a shouldered rectangular fanlight. Above this, there is a narrow light on the central face at the first floor, and an urn finial crowns the turret roof. The bay to the right is blank at ground level, while a bracketed platform supports the bipartite window on the first floor. A blind arrow-slit breaks the eaves of the gable.

The building features 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, a grey slate roof, and grey slate fish-scaling on the turret roof. The gablehead stacks are shouldered and coped, with tall octagonal cans, some of which are missing. There are also stacks at the rear with both octagonal and cylindrical cans.

The property is enclosed by a low sandstone boundary wall along the street, which includes an obelisk set on a square-plan pedestal to the right.
