Description
23 Upper Gilmore Place is a pair of plain classical houses built in 1810. They are two stories high with an attic and have a rectangular plan, featuring three bays. The exterior is made of coursed sandstone rubble, with polished ashlar doorpieces that are painted, while the sides and rear are finished in rubble. The houses have a base course and a cill course at the first floor, with droved quoins and lintels, as well as droved long and short surrounds around the windows.
The northwest elevation, which is the entrance side, has pilastered and corniced doorpieces for the two central bays. These feature deep-set panelled timber doors with plate glass fanlights above. There are single windows above and on all floors of the remaining bays, and each house has a three-light canted dormer. At the rear of the left side wall, there is a small lean-to with a boarded door.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, although the dormers have replacement glazing except for the central light of the left dormer. The roof is covered with grey slate and has piended dormers, with mutual skews. The northeast gable features a corniced stack with moulded cans, while the southwest has a mutual corniced stack that has been extended and rendered. The houses also have cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of coped rubble walls on the left and right sides, with low coped walls along the street that have iron railings and an opening for a bootscraper.
