5 West Mayfield, Edinburgh

8 West Mayfield is a building dating from around 1830, with later additions from the 19th century. It is a single-storey, 18-bay classical terrace that is nearly symmetrical. The exterior features cream sandstone polished ashlar, with rubble on the sides and rear. Notable architectural details include a base course, a cill course for the windows, advanced channelled quoins, and architraves on the original windows of Nos 5 and 8. There is an eaves course, a cornice, and a pedimental blocking course with dies between the houses at Nos 5 and 8, while the blocking course is panelled and raised at the center with dies at Nos 9 and 10.

On the south entrance elevation, there are central recessed doorways for each three-bay house, featuring panelled doors and plate glass fanlights, along with pilastered doorpieces. Most flanking bays have single windows, and there are full-height canted windows with three lights in bays 7, 12, and 13, while a smaller window is located in the outer left bay (No 10).

The windows at Nos 5, 9, and 10 are 12-pane timber sash and case, while other windows have 4 panes or are made of plate glass. The roofs are grey slate with piended and pitched designs, and there are rendered and coped ridge stacks.

The boundary walls consist of low, coursed, and coped rubble walls that line the street. The interior was not seen in 1996.
