8 Brighton Place, Edinburgh

John Baxter of Portobello, circa 1824. Mirrored pair of 2-storey with basement, 3-bay terraced classical houses with flanking single storey pavilions (recently rebuilt at No 6, having been demolished; raised to 2-storey at No 8) slightly set back. Polished ashlar, deeply- channelled at ground; droved ashlar to basements and NE pavilions; droved-finish render to SW pavilions; rubble to NE elevation, 1st floor, harled to ground, NE elevation; squared and snecked sandstone to rear of both houses; harled to SW elevation. Band course between basement and ground, ground and 1st floor; cill course to 1st floor; cornice, blocking course; band course and coping to NE wing.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 4 steps with original cast-iron handrails to deep-set 2-leaf Edinburgh panelled doors to outer bays of each house; plate glass rectangular fanlights and 1st floor windows above each. Windows to each floor of intermediate bays. Window and door to ground floor of each pavilion; window to 1st floor of SW pavilion.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: 2-bays to each house; flush-panelled door to basement of No 6; windows flanking. Rear of No 8 not seen fully, 1994; later tripartite window in bay to left; later single harled storey addition to outer right.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows to principal elevation; mainly 12-pane timber sash and case windows to rear. Grey slate piend and platformed roof. Rendered and coped mutual stack to front and rear; rendered and coped wallhead stack to rear, No 6; ashlar wallhead stack to rear of No 8; harled wallhead stack to SW; truncated rendered stack to front of SW elevation.

INTERIORS: interior of No 8 not seen, 1994. Cast-iron banister in place at No 6; panels to dado of stairwell and hall; floral-motif cornices in place in vestibule and hall. Stone flagged floor to hall, encaustic tiles to vestibule. Tripartite vestibule partition and stained glass door. Plaster work in good condition but only partly surviving (originally with swags between cornice and picture rail); no ceiling roses surviving. Shutters in place. Flaming torch and rod plasterwork detail in front room, ground floor. Timber later chimneypieces to front rooms, ground and 1st floor.

BOUNDARY WALLS: droved ashlar with coping to front of both house, good railings to No 8.
