Description

10, 12, and 14 Nelson Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1812. It stands four storeys tall with a basement and features six bays. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, showcasing V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There is a band course below the principal and first floors, a cill course at the first floor, projecting cills for the windows at the second floor, and a continual cornice at the second floor. The third floor has a cornice and blocking course. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that extend over the basement.

On the eastern (principal) elevation, there is a 12-panel timber common stair door located in the third bay from the right at the principal floor, alongside a part-glazed panelled timber door in the third bay from the left, both featuring plate glass rectangular fanlights. The remaining bays at the principal floor have plate glass windows, while the floors above exhibit regular fenestration. A modern door and glazing can be found in the basement on the right, which has a flagged area.

The northern and southern elevations are part of adjoining terraces that are listed separately (4-8 Nelson Street and 16 and 18 Nelson Street, respectively).

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stack is made of random rubble and rendered, with a shouldered design and a coped top, featuring circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped with iron railings that include balusters and finials, as well as a cast-iron lamp mounted on the railing, complete with a glass globe.
