Description
4, 6, 8 Nelson Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement terraced tenement designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1812. The building is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, featuring V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. It has a band course at the principal and first floors, a cill course at the first floor, and projecting cills for the windows at the second floor. A continual cornice runs along the second floor, with a cornice and blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.
On the east elevation, there is a nine-panel timber common stair door at the principal floor, which has a blind rectangular fanlight above it. This door is flanked by two timber doors: a six-panel door on the right and a nine-panel door on the left, both with plate glass rectangular fanlights. The remaining bays at the principal floor contain windows, and there is regular fenestration on the floors above and in the basement. The basement area is flagged.
The north elevation is part of an adjoining terrace, which is listed separately (21-34 Abercromby Place), as is the south elevation (10-14, even numbers, Nelson Street).
The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows. There are balconies that span three bays on the outer left and outer right at the third floor. The roof is a grey slate M-roof, with cast-iron rainwater goods. Random rubble ridge stacks are present, with broached ashlar quoins and a rendered shouldered gablehead stack that is coped and has circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property also features ashlar copes topped with iron railings that have balusters and finials. A cast-iron lamp mounted on the railing has a glass globe.
