48, 49, 50 South Bridge, Edinburgh

37 and 38 South Bridge in Edinburgh are possibly designed by Robert Kay around 1790. This building consists of a three-storey and attic row of Classical tenements, featuring six sections with six bays each, and shops on the ground floor. It is located on a steeply sloping site, which includes three basement storeys that face Cowgate to the north and Niddry Street to the east. The exterior is made of ashlar stone, with coursed rubble at the rear. The building has pedimented gables with lunettes facing Infirmary Street and Cowgate, along with a band course, raised cills, and a cornice.

The ground floor includes several round-arched openings with six-panel timber entrance doors and multi-pane glazed fanlights above. The shopfronts are adorned with timber fascias, fluted timber pilasters, decorative timber consoles, and timber panelled stallrisers. There are later additions including dormers, box dormers, and mansard and attic storeys. The windows to the north feature raised architraves with consoled cornices.

Most of the windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The building has coped gables, wallhead, and ridge stacks, and is covered with grey slates.
