27 Stafford Street, Edinburgh

27 Stafford Street in Edinburgh is a terrace of classical townhouses, likely designed by Robert Brown around 1819 to 1824. The building features two and three-storey sections with basements and attics, highlighted by a three-storey, five-bay corner block to the south, which has slightly advanced pedimented central bays. There is a segmental arch positioned off-center to the right. The ground floor of the corner block has a later timber shop front in a plain classical style. Notable alterations include later rectangular and bowed dormers added to No. 25.

The return section to Alva Street consists of five bays with blind openings on the left-hand bays and lacks a pediment. The exterior is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with a droved finish on the basement and a channelled appearance on the ground floor. The entrance platts overhang the basement, and there is a banded base course, a band course at the first floor, and a banded cill course at the first and second floors. The eaves are corniced, and the doorways have plain surrounds with rectangular fanlights. The glazing varies, featuring radial glazing at No. 27 and geometric glazing at Nos. 25, 27, and 29.

The windows predominantly consist of 12-pane timber sash and case designs, while the ground floor shop front uses plate glass. The building is topped with sandstone skews and grey slates, and it has a corniced ashlar gable, ridge, and pediment apex stacks fitted with modern clay cans. The basement recess is edged with cast-iron railings, and there are cast-iron balconies on the first floor to the right, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
