Description
28, 30, and 32 Alva Street in Edinburgh is a classical terrace building designed by J Gillespie Graham in 1823 and executed by R Hutchinson between 1826 and 1830. This three-storey structure features a seven-bay façade that presents a unified appearance, with main-door and common stair flats located behind it. The building has a basement area that includes some vaulted cellars and retaining walls.
Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the surface is droved at the basement and channelled at the ground floor. The entrance platts extend over the basement, and there is a base course at the ground floor along with banded cill courses at the first and second floors. The corniced eaves course is topped by a blocking course. The doors are set within round arched surrounds and feature fanlights with radial glazing. The windows on the first and second floors are architraved, with the first-floor windows having cornices. There are cast-iron anthemion balconies on the first floor. Notably, No. 32 has a later slate-hung attic storey that serves No. 30.
The windows predominantly consist of 15-pane and 12-pane designs in timber sash and case. The roof has a double pitch M-section and is covered with grey slates. Corniced ashlar gable stacks are present, fitted with modern clay cans. Additionally, there are cast-iron railings on ashlar coping stone edging the basement recess that faces the street.
