134 Constitution Street, Leith, Edinburgh

138 Constitution Street is a late 18th century house with a mid 19th century side wing, featuring two storeys and a basement in a symmetrical square plan. The house showcases classical details and includes a forecourt and a single-storey side extension to the north. It is constructed from cream sandstone, with stugged ashlar and polished dressings, and coursed and squared rubble with droved dressings on the rear and sides. Notable features include a band course above the basement, an eaves cornice, and architraved windows.

On the front elevation, there are three basement windows that have been blocked with glass bricks. The central Roman Doric doorway is accessed by steps and features a decorative railed balustrade, deep cavetto-moulded jambs, capitals adorned with stylised acanthus leaves, a fluted frieze with griffons, a dentilled cornice, and a two-leaf panelled door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight. The fenestration is regular.

The rear elevation has three bays, with a large modern flat-roofed extension in the centre bay and a Venetian stair window above it. The outer bays have single windows. The southwest elevation has three single windows, with the outer ones blocked, and a broad coped wallhead stack. The northeast elevation features a single window at the first floor and a broad coped wallhead stack, along with a tall garage at ground level.

The side wing is a single-storey, three-bay flat-roofed structure that forms the north side of the forecourt. It has segmental-arched recessed panels with a corniced doorway in the centre, and architraved and corniced windows in the outer bays and on the return to the southeast, which are blinded. The south side of the forecourt is bordered by a boundary wall of South Leith parish church, which has similar detailing.

The windows throughout the property are timber sash and case, with six-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes, while the rear features twelve-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead flashings, along with two wallhead stacks. The eaves gutter is moulded.

Inside, the staircase is adorned with cast-iron balusters, and the ceilings feature dentilled cornices with inset medallions.
