Description

This is a five-story corner tenement block built in 1888 by Edward Calvert. It incorporates details reminiscent of Scottish 17th-century architecture. The building is located on the corner of And 19 Montpelier, with shop fronts along Bruntsfield Avenue.

The exterior is constructed of cream-coloured sandstone, using a combination of coursed and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, and features painted shop fronts. There are cill courses at the first and second floors, and an eaves band. The windows on the second floor have incised lintels and a bracketted cill course. The attic windows are dormered, with decorative finials. The building includes full-height canted windows that corbel upwards, culminating in square, gable-headed dormers. The wall stacks are in a T-section panelled form, with roundel motifs, corbelled from the second floor and featuring horizontal banding of ashlar and rubble. Stone pilasters and capitals adorn the shop fronts.

The southwest elevation, facing Bruntsfield Avenue, has six bays, including an angle bay. Three projecting shops are present at ground floor level, characterized by fluted pilasters, varied foliate capitals, blank fascias, and cornices. A two-leaf panelled shop door is set into the chamfered corner to the left, above which is a four-story canted window with an ogee roof. The central shop front has a recessed door to the left. The outer shopfront has a door to the right. Alternate blank bays and bays with single windows feature above, with a corbelled wallhead stack in the central bay. The bay to the outer right is set back, with a curved corner and a single window per floor.

The northwest elevation, facing Montpelier, is divided into two sections. The left side has a five-bay tenement, with full-height canted windows in the outer bays, smaller windows centrally, and a central door with a rectangular fanlight featuring border glazing and a wallhead stack above. The right side has a six-bay tenement, excluding the corner bay. This section includes a full-height canted window to the left, a blank bay with a corbelled wallhead stack to the right, two bays of single windows, and a bay of single windows that flank a pair of doors off-centre, with a square fanlight (and border glazing) for No. 19. Above the paired doors is a blank bay with a plain wallhead chimney flanked by attic windows with scrolled shoulders.

The windows are sash and case with plate glass, with a six-pane, fixed plate glass lower section that has colored panes in some cases. Timber mullions are present in the corner shop, and ornamental vent openings cap the window frames. The roof is covered with green slate, with lead flashings. Four wallhead stacks are present. The interiors were not inspected in 1992. A low boundary wall and some cast-iron railings are located along Montpelier.
