15-19 Torphichen Street, Edinburgh

21-25 Torphichen Street is a classical tenement building in Edinburgh, designed by Thomas Bonnar between 1824 and 1831. It is a three-storey structure with a recessed attic above a basement, featuring a grand 36-bay facade. The basement is constructed from droved sandstone ashlar, while the upper levels are made of polished sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Notable architectural details include a band course between the basement and ground floors, as well as between the ground and first floors, a cill course at the second floor, and a string course above the second floor windows. The cornice at the second floor is raised at the ends and bracketed at the western end, supporting a corniced termination. The eaves course is present at the attic level.

The principal elevation facing Torphichen Street is symmetrical, with nine bay sections. It features panelled timber doors, some of which are part-glazed, with rectangular fanlights, primarily four-pane, at the basement level. The ground floor has a 2-1-1-2 fenestration pattern separating the doorways, with consoled cornices above the recessed panelled timber doors that have geometrical-patterned fanlights, mostly with margin panes. The upper floors have regular fenestration.

The west and east elevations are mostly hidden by adjacent buildings. The windows are primarily 12-pane timber sash and case, with some 8-pane timber sash and case windows in the attic storey. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring coped and rendered ridge and wallhead stacks with moulded cans and coped skews. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods.

Fleur-de-lys railings line the street and the entrance platts, with acorn-headed shafts flanking the entrances to the basement.
