Description

7 Atholl Place is a large, 31-bay, palace-block tenement built between 1824 and 1831 in Edinburgh, designed by Thomas Bonnar. It incorporates a 7-bay curved terminal pavilion at its southwest end, joining a smaller 4-bay block on Torphichen Street to the south. The basement is of droved sandstone ashlar, while the above levels are of polished sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, painted at ground floor level. A prominent band course separates the basement from the ground floor, and another defines the boundary between the ground and first floors. A cill course is present at the second floor, a string course sits above the second-floor windows, and cornices are located at both the second and third floors, with a blocking course to the central section. Corner pavilions are similarly treated with cornices and blocking courses. The ground and first floors feature architraves over openings and panelled aprons to the windows, while the corner block has bays divided at the first and second floors by giant anta pilasters. Ashlar steps and oversailing entrance platts define the basement level.

The principal, northwest elevation, is symmetrical, featuring a 9-bay pavilion to the northeast with a 3-bay return to Atholl Crescent Lane, a central 18-bay section, and a corner pavilion to the southwest set forward with anta pilasters to the upper floors. The central pavilion has a mansard roof with recessed 2-pane dormers. The ground floor fenestration follows a regular 2-1-1-2 pattern, with windows punctuating the first, second, and third floors. Ground floor doorways are topped with consoled cornices and recessed panelled timber doors with fanlights.

The southwest, corner elevation, incorporates recessed timber doors to the principal floor, with glass panels flanking the entrance to No. 11, and a 4-panelled timber door with fanlight to the principal floor at No. 12, framed by a corniced, pilastered doorpiece surmounted by a decorative iron balustrade, followed by a similar door at No. 13. The south, Torphichen Street elevation, features an advanced bay framing the corner with Atholl Place and is distinguished by anta pilasters to the upper floors, a consoled cornice above the doorway to the principal floor, a recessed panelled timber door with fanlight, and regular fenestration to all floors above. The southeast elevation was not inspected in 2000.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with 2, 4, 12, and 16-pane glazing, although some modern single-pane windows are present on the ground floor of the corner pavilion. The roof is covered in grey slate, while stacks are constructed from coped and chamfered sandstone ashlar with moulded cylindrical cans to the northwest, or rendered with circular cans to the corner pavilion and Torphichen Street. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present, as are iron railings to the street and bordering platts to doorways, many featuring fleur-de-lys heads. The interiors were not inspected in 2000.
