Description

This building is a public house known as Porters Bar, dating from around 1850, with its northern elevation modified around 1890. It is part of a terrace of three two-storey, three-bay houses, with the public house occupying the ground floor. The structure features painted coursed rubble with droved quoins on numbers 6-8, while number 5 has painted pebbledash. A basecourse runs along the bottom, and the first floor has a regular arrangement of windows. The bar front includes a frieze and cornice, with roll-moulded, shoulder-arched openings and stop-chamfered doorways. The entrance to the bar has a two-leaf timber panelled door, supported by scroll brackets that hold up a slightly advanced section of the frieze above. There are two timber panelled doors with plate glass fanlights leading to the flats above, and a bracketed window balcony with a decorative wrought-iron balustrade above the left door. Additionally, decorative wrought-iron window balconies adorn three windows on the first floor to the outer right.

The first-floor windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, while the ground floor features large plate glass windows, although the windows for number 5 are boarded over. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are stone skews along with rendered coped stacks topped with tall cylindrical cans.

Inside the Porters Bar, the lobby features reeded timber doors and panelling, with leaded stained glass in the upper panels that includes lettering on the doors indicating "JUG BAR" to the left and "PUB BAR" to the right. The door furniture is made of copper. The mosaic floor bears the legend "PIERSHILL TAVERN." The ceiling has a decorative plaster cornice with dentil and egg and dart mouldings. The public bar is timber panelled and includes an arcaded Spanish mahogany gantry, a mahogany bar, and further doors with border-glazed stained glass panels. The ceilings in this area are compartmented and also feature dentil and egg and dart mouldings.
