55 George Iv Bridge, Edinburgh

49, 50, and 51 George IV Bridge is a tenement block built in 1861 by Henry Hardy of Smith and Hardy Partners. This three-storey building with an attic faces George IV Bridge and features shops on the ground floor. The structure drops seven storeys towards Cowgate and Merchant Street at the rear. It is constructed from polished ashlar and has stop-moulded arrises, a cornice, and a blocking course. The north and south elevations have broad, shouldered wall-head gables, with a round-arched window at the centre, flanked by stacks that are incorporated into the wall-head and bracketed beneath the cornice. The ground floor accommodates commercial premises facing Cowgate and Merchant Street.

The building predominantly features four-paned glazing in timber sash and case windows with horns. It has a slate roof, end and rear wall-head stacks, and coped skews.
