Description
General, Well Court in Dean Village, Edinburgh, is a significant residential complex designed by Sydney Mitchell and Wilson in 1883, with later repairs and renovations completed in 2009. This four- and five-storey building, which includes some attics, consists of 54 flats and a separate former common hall known as Woodbarn Hall. The architecture is in the Renaissance Freestyle, featuring a roughly rectangular layout arranged around a central courtyard, set in a picturesque location beside the Water of Leith.
The exterior is constructed from coursed squared rubble with red sandstone dressings, showcasing deep overhanging eaves and a variety of crowstepped and shaped gables, some of which are advanced. A large round-arched pend on the north side is adorned with red sandstone dressings and a red brick vault. The fenestration is roughly regular, including some bipartite windows, and there are rectangular dormers in the attic with catslide roofs.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with small pane glazing. The pitched roof, featuring some catslides, is covered with red clay tiles. The gable ends are coped with rubble, and there are ridge stacks, mostly with modern cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the flats are accessed from common staircases characterized by large arched openings leading to landings, which feature cast-iron railings with a thistle pattern on the spikes. The stairs are mainly brick with curved handrails. The flats themselves are primarily one or two rooms, each with small kitchens and bathrooms.
Woodbarn Hall is a large detached hall with a rectangular plan and a central tower. It has a moulded cill course at the first floor and prominent corbelled canted transomed and mullioned four-light bays on the south side, topped with tall conical tiled roofs. The fenestration is roughly regular. The central tower features a prominent clock face on the south and east sides, a corbelled crenellated parapet, arcaded timber louvers above, and a shaped leaded roof with a cast-iron weathervane.
The boundary walls are made of coursed random rubble topped with sandstone ashlar copes.
