Description

1 Hope Terrace is a villa built around 1860, situated on a corner site with a service wing at the rear. The building features coursed stugged sandstone with droved margins and chamfered reveals. The elevation facing Whitehouse Loan has three bays, with a timber and glass lean-to conservatory forming the entrance in the outer right bay. The central bay is advanced and gabled, with single windows on both floors and a corbelled gablehead stack. The outer left bay also has single windows, with the first-floor window breaking the eaves in a pedimented and finialled dormer head.

On the elevation facing Hope Terrace, there is an architraved doorway at the center with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. A pedimented and finialled window breaks the eaves at the first floor above the doorway. To the outer left, there is a single-storey canted window in an advanced and gabled bay, with a hoodmoulded window above it at the first floor. This bay features an obelisk finial at the gablehead. To the right, there are two windows at ground level, and another pedimented and finialled window breaks the eaves at the first floor above. The villa has 4-pane and 8-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate gabled roof, tall shouldered and corniced gablehead and ridge stacks, coped gables with kneelers, and block skewputts.

The interior was not seen in 1991. The property is enclosed by a high coped boundary wall along Whitehouse Loan, which includes two pyramidal capped gatepiers. There are low boundary walls with modern timber fencing along Hope Terrace, and a modern detached flat-roofed garage located to the northwest of the house.
