22 Northumberland Street, Edinburgh

20 Northumberland Street in Edinburgh is an early 19th-century terraced tenement designed by architects Robert Reid and William Sibbald, with No 22 by Robert Wright. This three-storey and basement building features 21 bays, consisting of seven three-bay houses, slightly raised to the left of center. The exterior is made of polished ashlar sandstone, showcasing V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. It includes a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal floor and first floor, as well as a cill course at the first floor and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The windows at the first floor of Nos 20 and 22 are architraved with cornices, while the second floor has smaller windows. The entrance features ashlar steps and entrance platts that extend over the basement.

On the north (principal) elevation, there are recessed doorpieces in the third, sixth, seventh, twelfth, thirteenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth bays from the left, which consist of panelled timber doors with various decorative rectangular fanlights. The remaining bays have regular fenestration at the principal floor, as well as on the floors above and in the basement. There is a double entrance platt for Nos 20 and 22.

The east elevation has a coursed rubble gable that is mostly blank, featuring a blind window and a window centered at the first floor, along with another window centered at the second floor.

The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 28-30A Northumberland Street.

The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stack is made of rubble with broached ashlar quoins, and there are rubble and rendered ridge stacks that are coped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and pineapple finials, along with cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings that have glass globes.
