Description
The Lodge at Dean Cemetery, located at 70 Belford Road in Edinburgh, was designed by David Cousin and laid out in 1845, with later extensions added in 1871 and 1877 by James Jerdan and Son in 1909. The cemetery features a large area with a northern extension to Ravelston Terrace and multiple entrances, including gate lodges on the east side (Dean Path) and south side (Belford Road). The boundary walls are made of coursed random rubble with ashlar copes, incorporating materials from the former Dean House in the south wall. There are cast-iron railings and gates, and the lower terrace to the southeast is built into steep banks above the Water of Leith. The entrance gateways to Dean Path are twin hemicycle designs, with the northern entrance being part of the 1871 extension. These gateways feature corniced square piers made of sandstone ashlar with rock-faced bands, topped with ashlar pyramid finials on ball feet, and are flanked by large cast-iron gates. The entrance on Queensferry Road, designed by James Jerdan and Son in 1909-10, includes walls and gates in a Renaissance style, along with a single-storey lodge made of coursed squared sandstone with some ashlar quoins, featuring bowed windows and a central stack. The gate lodge at the Dean Path entrance is an L-plan Tudor gabled structure that forms part of the retaining wall, constructed of coursed squared sandstone with some sandstone ashlar quoins, and features a prominent gable end with decorative fretted barge-boarding. The cemetery is notable for its extensive range of outstanding sculptural monuments dating from 1845 to the present.
