42, 44, 46 East Fountainbridge, Edinburgh

36, 38, and 40 East Fountainbridge in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement tenement block built in 1822 by William Burn. It consists of ten bays and features a depressed-arched pend, leading to a cobbled area at the center (Bread Street Lane). The building has polished ashlar at the ground level, droved ashlar at the basement, coursed rubble with ashlar dressings on the first, second, and third floors, and random rubble on the sides and rear.

The south elevation facing East Fountainbridge has dividing bands between the basement and ground floors, as well as between the ground and first floors. There is a cill course on the first and second floors and a blocking course at the eaves. Stone steps and platts cover the basement area. The ground floor has alternating doors and windows; the doors are either arched or square-headed, with two-leaf timber panelled doors and six-pane glazed fanlights above the square-headed doors. The upper floors have regular fenestration.

Cast-iron railings are present in the basement areas and stair platts, along with grilles under some ground floor windows. The building features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, and corniced stone stacks with circular cans.
