Description

The graveyard at Duddingston Parish Church dates back to the 12th century and features a Romanesque design. Originally, it had an aisleless nave with only a chancel, highlighted by a richly detailed southwest doorway and chancel arch. A western tower was added later, and in 1631, a north aisle was introduced, which includes two windows with gothic survival tracery. Significant alterations occurred, likely in the late 18th century, resulting in gothic windows on the south wall, modifications to the east gable, a scalloped parapet on the tower, and obelisk pinnacles. The interior was remodeled by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1889, reflecting a 17th-century style. The graveyard also contains jougs, which are probably from the 17th century, and a hexagonal watch tower built in 1824 by Robert Brown. This two-storey structure is made of ashlar and features a corbelled and battlemented parapet, octagonal chimney shafts, and round arched windows. Additionally, there are simple square gatepiers topped with pyramid caps.
