Description

22 and 22A Merchiston Park in Edinburgh is a bargeboarded villa designed by David Rhind and dated 1876. This three-storey building features two bays and is constructed from cream sandstone with stugged ashlar on the front and squared, snecked stugged rubble on the rear and sides. Architectural details include a moulded string course above the first floor that rises over the central lights, chamfered reveals, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, incised barbegoards, and shouldered and corniced stacks.

The front elevation is M-gabled, with the left bay showcasing a full-height canted window topped with a half-piend roof. The right bay features a bipartite window on the ground and second floors, and a tripartite window on the first floor. There is a raised entrance porch on the outer right, accessed by steps with an ashlar balustrade. The porch has a catslide roof supported by timber brackets rising from stone corbels, and a roll-moulded shouldered-arch doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight.

The rear elevation is asymmetrical with M-gables and includes a tall central round-arched stair window with coloured border glazing. The northwest elevation has three bays, with a central gabled bay featuring a kingpost and a bipartite window on the first floor, along with a small round-arched window above. There is an entrance porch on the return, a tall gabled bay to the right with an apex stack, and a later double garage at ground level. The left side has a blank recessed bay with a wallhead stack.

The southeast elevation also has three bays, with a secondary entrance door on the ground floor. The central bay contains bipartite windows, and the wallhead is raised in the gablehead with an apex stack. Single windows and wallhead stacks flank this central bay.

The villa features timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing, a slate roof with lead flashings, two wallhead stacks, and two apex stacks. Ornamental gutterheads add to the detailing.

The property is surrounded by a tall rubble wall to the rear and sides with semi-circular coping, and a low wall to the front with saddleback coping. The interior was not seen in 1992.
