Description

1 Wardie Square is a terrace of six single-fronted cottages built around 1850, situated on a slope in three stages (1-2-3). These cottages are single storey with attics featuring piended dormers. They are constructed of brick with droved ashlar dressings and have stone sills for the ground floor windows.

The west (principal) elevation displays alternating reversed plans, except for No 6, which has its entrance on the left side like No 5. Each cottage has an entrance and a single window on the ground floor, except for No 6, which has its window on the south elevation instead. Above the ground floor window, there is a piended dormer. Most doors have been replaced, but No 6 may still have a boarded timber door, while No 3 has a later boarded timber door. The gables are finished with polished ashlar copings at the changes in the roofline and at the gable ends, particularly between Nos 5 and 6, where there is no change in the roofline.

The east (rear) elevation appears largely unaltered for Nos 1 and 6, each featuring a small window to the right of the upper floor. Nos 2 and 3 have been extended or had their roofs raised, each now featuring two piended dormers on the upper floor. Nos 4 and 5 have similar but more modern extensions with higher roofs to incorporate additional windows.

The south elevation features a canted gable end painted red, with a single window providing light to the ground floor of No 6.

The cottages mainly have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with Nos 4 and the ground floor of No 5 having 2-pane sash and case windows. No 6 has 12-pane PVCu top hung casements, while the rear has a variety of mostly modern windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features four ridge stacks, with shared flues between Nos 1 and 2 and between Nos 3 and 4. Two stacks are harled and coped, while the other two are brick with moulded coping.

The interiors have not been inspected since 1997. The boundary wall surrounding the properties is made of coursed rubble with rounded rubble coping on the south and east sides, partly rendered, and has a gate inserted at the rear of No 1.
